Pierre Gasly says his driving at Toro Rosso was no different to what he did at Red Bull Racing, having ended 2019 F1 season on a high.
Gasly had a stressful 2019 F1 season, as he was demoted from the senior team of Red Bull to the junior one of Toro Rosso (to be Alpha Tauri). The switch came after certain disappointing results, and understandably, it messed with his momentum.
Gasly, however, remains adamant that his performance in the cockpit remained stable across both the teams in this season which has been anything but. In fact, the Frenchman even proposed that he may have become a better driver due to the experience.
“l think in a way it [the switch] was a positive chance to show myself as well the right things and the things I needed,” said Gasly. “Of course I’ve seen in both teams and I know what worked, what didn’t and then on both sides.
“It obviously was a good experience to see that but I don’t think it was needed to perform at a better level because I don’t feel that I’m performing better, I’m still driving the same way, approaching every weekend the same way.
“I always try to deliver the best performance I can and give 110 percent of myself every single weekend. It’s not like I feel I’ve changed anything but it was good to get the results in this second part of the season.”
Unlike the last time when such switch happened, both Gasly and Alexander Albon performed well with their respective opportunities. The Frenchman got the podium in Brazil, where the Thai racer was also very close to have his first.
In the end, Gasly finished seventh as he lost out on sixth to McLaren’s Carlos Sainz on the final lap in Abu Dhabi, but crucially, he was able to beat Albon. The improved run didn’t get him the Red Bull seat but he will be eager to perform well with Alpha Tauri in 2020.
