Pierre Gasly says his position in the team was much better by the end of F1 2023 after starting afresh multiple times.

It was a new journey for Gasly with Alpine at the start of the 2023 F1 season and so he had more work to do than teammate Esteban Ocon. At the same time, the French outfit themselves had changes throughout the season to make things complicated.

As it is Gasly had to adjust himself with the new environment which did take few rounds at the start of the season. It wasn’t easy as they did make mistakes but as the season progressed and especially in second half, they started to gel well.

But there was a change again at his side when his race engineer Karel Loos moved away for a larger role and was replaced by John Howard for the last few rounds. It was another re-adjustment for Gasly, but he was fine overall seeing the growth from start to end.

“I definitely felt that things were getting better and also within the team and communication and the dialogue, the understanding what type of car I like,” said Gasly. “I think there were couple if mis-shots at the start of the year but also from not understanding where the car is at and how to always maximise it, couple of mis-shots on strategy at times, a bit of bad luck to start, I think the way we were operating in the last three months, definitely a much higher level.

“I had a race engineer change for the 2-3 races because the one that I had moved away to take a new role like a bigger role based at the factory in terms of re-orginisation, so I had to work with someone new. I am very happy with how we are working and also with John. Once again, there was no turning point but clearly from start of the year in the first three months compared to the last three months, I definitely see quite a big change the efficiency that we were achieving as a team.

“My position within the team and I am in a much better place and I know starting in Bahrain in 2024 is going to be very big difference compared to where I was at the start of 2023,” summed up Gasly, who will now be looking to capitalise well in his second year to continue his momentum to beat Esteban Ocon at the very least.
