Pierre Gasly, driver for the Alpine team in Formula 1, has expressed his frustration over what he considers unfair tactics from Racing Bulls during the Dutch Grand Prix, held in Zandvoort. Gasly finished the race in a disappointing eleventh position, which he directly attributes to the strategy of his competitors in the battle for the constructors’ standings.
The Frenchman had a standout performance in qualifying, finishing eighth in the sprint race, securing a good position for the main race. However, as the race progressed, his plans were thwarted first by an unfortunate pit stop and then by a bottleneck that kept him behind for too long.
In the main race, after a good start that took him to eighth place, Gasly found himself stuck behind Arvid Lindblad, who had received a drive-through penalty. The Alpine driver spent seven laps trying to overtake him before getting blocked and losing the opportunity to Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda, who also passed him, making his race even more difficult.
Gasly took a total of 17 laps to get past Lindblad, and once on a clear track, he doubted that he could recover the time lost. ‘Racing Bulls ruined our race halfway. They played their team game for the championship and they did it well,’ Gasly said, adding that he would not forget what had happened.
Despite Racing Bulls not scoring points with Tsunoda and Lindblad finishing in 11th and 12th places, the team’s tactic cost Gasly dearly, who ended just a second behind a Fernando Alonso who also made a single pit stop. 🙁
After what happened, Gasly expressed that battling Racing Bulls would serve as a reminder for the rest of the season: ‘It’s frustrating, but it’s Zandvoort. You can’t overtake easily, but the scenario will change in the upcoming races.’
In response to Gasly’s complaints, Lindblad remained indifferent, stating that he had tried to play his role in helping the team as much as possible. Both teams are currently in a tight dispute for fifth place in the constructors’ championship, with Racing Bulls accumulating 66 points and Alpine 63.
