Catalunya is calling for FIA World Endurance Championship competitors this weekend as the series’ enthralling 2026 title battles approach fever pitch. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló hosts the penultimate round of the campaign, the inaugural 6 Hours of Barcelona by Visit Qatar.

Despite hosting the 2019-20 pre-season ‘Prologue’ group test, the venue has never previously staged an FIA WEC race weekend. Measuring 4.657km and comprising 14 turns, the track’s long main straight and variety of fast, flowing corners mixed with more technical sections will truly test the cars’ all-round capabilities and aerodynamic attributes.

The event will be the FIA WEC’s 50th race in Europe, making the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya the 16th different venue to feature in the championship and the first new addition to the calendar in two-and-a-half years.

Title-chasing Toyota star celebrates a century in Catalunya

The scene-stealing Hypercars will be competing in Barcelona for the first time, meaning there is no prior reference point and adding another element of unpredictability to a fiercely disputed category in which five different manufacturers have started from pole position over the latest five rounds.

Toyota extended its margin at the summit of the standings following its unexpected home turf triumph at Fuji last month. Mathematically, the Japanese giant, the most decorated marque in FIA WEC history, could secure both world championship trophies in Catalunya.

Its #8 trio of Ryō Hirakawa, Brendon Hartley and Sébastien Buemi sit ten points ahead of the sister #7 crew in the Drivers’ classification, with only 26 points remaining in play after the end of the event.

The Swiss star Buemi will this weekend become the first driver to contest 100 races in the series, and he is looking to mark that milestone by clinching an unprecedented fifth career crown. On all three previous occasions that he has led the way with two rounds remaining (2014, 2018-19 and 2023), Buemi has gone on to lift the laurels. The last time the overall championship was decided with a race still to run was 2017, when Hartley was part of the title-winning crew.

BMW will be determined to ensure such a scenario does not recur, though the Bavarian brand has ground to make up after slipping 23 points adrift of Toyota in the Manufacturers’ battle. Both its #20 and #15 driving crews are solidly in the mix, but René Rast and Robin Frijns, third in the Drivers’ standings on 75 points, have scored just four points from the most recent three races and must hit back if they are to stay in contention.

Reigning world champion Ferrari is another front-runner, but needs a big result in Barcelona if it is to take the fight for glory into the season finale in front of its adoring tifosi at Monza next month. The title-defending 499P will be making its 30th FIA WEC appearance this weekend.

Three Spaniards in the top class

Miguel Molina will be one of three Spaniards in the Hypercar field, alongside Daniel Juncadella at Genesis and Aston Martin’s Alex Riberas.

The famous British marque’s striking green Valkyrie has finished inside the points in every race thus far in 2026, although in the #009 entry Riberas has yet to place higher than ninth, leaving him fired up to put in a starring display on home soil.

Fellow Barcelona native Juncadella fell just short of a maiden top-ten finish in the series’ top tier in Japan, as Korean newcomer Genesis continues to make progress at the international pinnacle of the long-distance discipline. The manufacturer is familiar with the track from a three-day test there at the end of last year.

Corvette crew closing in on first LMGT3 crown

Like in Hypercar, a title could be wrapped up in the LMGT3 division in Catalunya, with TF Sport setting its sights on the Teams’ trophy and a whole cluster of rivals redoubling their efforts to rein in the pace-setting Corvette crews.

Aston Martin’s #27 Heart of Racing Team Vantage is best placed to pounce. It is the only car to have reached the rostrum in both of the latest two rounds in the class, winning in Austin and finishing runner-up at Fuji, while Manthey’s pair of Porsches and the Team WRT-run BMWs are stealthily lurking in the shadows.

VISTA AF Corse’s #21 Ferrari 296 Evo is similarly still in the hunt, but the Italian marque has now gone 11 races without an LMGT3 victory, its longest barren run in any GT class in the championship.

Timetable and standings

The on-track sessions will begin with free practice on Friday, 16 October. Qualifying, including the Hyperpole top-ten shootout, starts at 11:50 CEST (LMGT3) and 15:40 CEST (Hypercar) on Saturday, 17 October, with the six-hour race getting underway at 12:00 CEST on Sunday, 18 October.
