FIA has come in support of Alain Prost after the Frenchman desired to leave social media due to rise of angst from Brazilian F1 fans.
Former F1 champion Prost has been labeled as the villain mostly in the story of rival and champion Ayrton Senna, when they fought for world championship. They have done being teammates and also as rivals in two different teams in their time, which has been depicted in various medias.
Prost hasn’t liked either of it. The Frenchman spent more time in shooting the Asif Kapadia-directed documentary, while he wasn’t part of the Netflix movie which released last year. It was the portrayal in the latter which irked him more, where he feels a lot of it was made up for drama purpose.
Since the release of the movie, Prost has received far more hate on social media, especially from Brazil. For years, he has endured it from the South American nation, but now he feels it is getting too much to handle, which is why he wishes to be less on social media to talk to the fans.
Prost feels the portrayal in movies is typical in nature to show him as a villain, even though the relation between him and Senna improved vastly as their career progressed. The Frenchman opened up about his side when speaking to Canal+, which forced the FIA to respond to the matter too.
The FIA has been trying to combat online hate whether against their own members or it is drivers/teams. “As a former world champion in his sport, Alain Prost should not be driven off social media due to online abuse,” the governing body said in a statement to Planet Network.
“His experience highlights the harsh reality faced by sportsmen and women at all levels—daily abuse, harassment, and even threats. Under the FIA’s leadership, UAOA is developing the educational, technological, and regulatory solutions needed to protect competitors, officials, and fans to ensure that sport remains a place of strong but fair and inclusive competition.”
