Fermin Aldeguer, MotoGP rider, will not participate in the Dutch Grand Prix after suffering a vertebra fracture during an accident in the Friday practice session.
The MotoGP doctor, Ángel Charte, declared Aldeguer unfit to compete on Saturday morning, just before the final practice round of the weekend. According to the statement from the Gresini team, the young rider suffered a fracture in his T7 vertebra, which will be evaluated in the coming days.
Aldeguer was taken to the hospital for checks after suffering a heavy fall at corner 11 at the start of the main practice. At the time of the accident, doctors indicated that they would examine his condition before the FP2 session, but no further details were provided until later.
With this injury, the Spanish rider will miss the second race of this season, as he had already been sidelined from the first event in Thailand due to a fracture in his left femur during preseason testing. Although he returned to compete in the second round in Brazil and managed to podium in Barcelona, he had warned that he would not fully recover until the end of the season.
In another note, Aldeguer’s teammate, Alex Márquez, also had an accident on Friday afternoon, falling at the same corner and causing a red flag with just three minutes left in the session. Márquez suffered a contusion to his right shoulder and abrasions on his left forearm, but managed to avoid fractures.
After the incident, he commented that, despite the accident, it had been a positive day in terms of performance. “I was trying to push and made a mistake with the bike that made me lift off,” he explained. “Fortunately, I’m fine; just some scratches, but everything is okay. The collarbone is fine, now we’ll see how I feel tomorrow morning.”
His condition will also be assessed by MotoGP on Saturday morning.
