The Formula 2 Championship has announced a “supersized” event for its upcoming round in Baku, with the inclusion of an additional feature race in Azerbaijan. This decision was made just ten days before the start of the competition weekend.
The decision to expand the program comes at a time when the continuity of the Formula 1 season is uncertain, with the GP of Qatar and Abu Dhabi at risk due to the complicated geopolitical situation in the region.
Expanded format for Baku
The new format for the Baku weekend will include double qualifying sessions and two feature races, in addition to the traditional practice sessions. Bruno Michel, CEO of F2, has commented that, since F2 is the only support event for the Azerbaijan F1 Grand Prix, it was decided to offer an expanded experience for all fans and attendees.
Michel emphasized: “We are very happy to make the 12th round of our season so unique, considering that the Baku circuit always provides exciting fairs.”
Implications for the future
Although the reason for program expansion has not been specified, experts speculate that it could be a way to adapt to possible cancellations of final events and compensate for potential point losses.
The F2 season finale is still scheduled for Abu Dhabi, although the situation could change rapidly depending on the decisions made by Formula 1 regarding the remaining calendar of the year.
The FIA and Formula 1 are expected to announce decisions about the rest of the 2026 calendar before the end of the month, with the Bahrain race relocated to Sepang, Malaysia, already confirmed for early October.
