F1 Nation talks Hamilton; Russell says tricky track helped bigger teams

F1 Nation podcast looks at Turkish GP and the contrasting performances of Mercedes drivers as George Russell adds on his race and more.

Overlaying triumphant music at the start of the latest ‘F1 Nation’ podcast was a tribute to Lewis Hamilton’s seventh title win, which preceded dialogue about the Mercedes driver’s win, and where it ranks among his best-ever victories.

Hosts Tom Clarkson and Alex Jacques also discussed the contrasting race endured by Valtteri Bottas, which saw the Finn fail to find the same success as teammate Hamilton, or even any at all.

Clarkson provided accounts of Hamilton’s mood after the race, and described him as very calm – far more so than usual. Subsequently, the Brit said of his compatriot Hamilton that he is likely on par with Roger Federer, Tiger Woods, or Cristiano Ronaldo in the greater sporting world.

Jacques – called AJ by his co-host – added the name of Serena Williams to Clarkson’s list, before he spoke further of Hamilton and his achievements. Moving away from the seven-time F1 champion for the first time in the episode, the hosts then discussed the Bahrain International Circuit, which is to host the upcoming Bahrain GP.

A conversation on the matter of track surfaces ensued, with Clarkson remarking that Bahrain will be somewhat of an adjustment for drivers, with its high-grip asphalt starkly contrasting that of the resurfaced Istanbul Park on Sunday.

Afterwards, Williams’ George Russell joined the show, initially remarking, aptly, on the lack of grip at Istanbul. The Brit detailed, whilst talking to Clarkson, the negative feedback loop that prevented those with less competitive cars from finding grip and tyre temperature, and the positive one that allowed faster cars to manage their tyres significantly better.

Russell would then discuss Hamilton, and said of his fellow Brit that he gave him advice and condolences in the wake of his gut-wrenching crash at Imola – one element of a month-long period he described as “crazy” when prompted.

He also explained what has been going on within the team since its sale to Dorilton Capital, and said that moods were positive, spurred on by promises of prosperity for the F1 team in the future. Upon the end of the interview, Russell spoke on his fitness regime, and running abilities.

Clarkson shared an anecdote of his gym visit alongside F1 CEO Chase Carey, who outpaced him on the treadmill, and continued on for quite some more time, as the relatively longer episode of F1 Nation ended then.
