Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was fastest on Day 2 of the second F1 pre-season test at Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona as Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton hit trouble.
The early time of 1m16.841s from Vettel on the C5 compound remained as the fastest of Day 2 of the second F1 pre-season test at Barcelona as he led AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly (1m17.066s, C5) and Racing Point’s Lance Stroll (1m17.118s, C3).
Once again Racing Point were among the front-runners with not much issues. The day started with a wet track due to rain which limited running and had some drivers go off as well. Alfa Romeo Racing’s Antonio Giovinazzi had a contact with the barrier.
He had a broken rear wing which resulted in a red flag. Moments later, Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen also ran over a wet kerb and spun onto the gravel to cause another red flag, with Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas also having an off moment.
It was Vettel to cause a red flag then when he spun at Turn 5. The afternoon session had Mercedes’ Hamilton causing the lone red flag when he stopped due to an oil pressure issue, where the team decided to not venture out after just 14 laps.
Meanwhile, the rest of the standings had Williams’ Nicholas Latifi (1m17.313s, C5) in fourth from McLaren’s Lando Norris (1m17.573s, C3) as Red Bull’s Verstappen (1m17.738s, C2) was sixth with Mercedes’ Bottas (1m17.985s, C3) seventh.
Renault’s Esteban Ocon (1m18.013s, C4) lined-up in eighth with Haas’ Kevin Magnussen (1m18.225s, C3) ninth as Red Bull’s Alexander Albon (1m18.393, C2) rounded out the Top 10. Like Ocon, Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo had a low time time to be 11th.
He set a 1m18.395s on the C3 compound as Alfa Romeo’s Giovinazzi (1m19.670s, C3) was 12th after his early shunt as Mercedes’ Hamilton (1m22.425s, C3) rounded out the 13 drivers.
