A summary of how things panned out in Round 5 of the E1 Championship is here.
Round 5 was an explosive round with close racing and contact throughout the two races. The Race 1 again saw pole man, Muhammad Ibrahim from Team Flash lead off the line. But unlike previous races, he did not have the pace to pull away and it was Black Arts duo of Josh Purwien and Luke Banister keeping the young Indian constantly under pressure.
Banister actually tried to go around the outside of Les Combes on lap 6, but Ibrahim rebuffed him to hold on to the lead. However on the following lap Banister tried another move down the inside at the same part of the track with Ibrahim swerving to the inside to again stop the Australian from overtaking. Black Arts would protest the move post race as a change of direction in the braking zone.
Race Control gave Ibrahim a ten second penalty, which would drop him down to P4. Up front Josh Purwien would take the lead from Banister to win his second race of the season ahead of Banister. It was the team’s first one two in the E1 Championship. Following the Australian duo home in third was Mikko Nassi from SafeHouse.
In the reverse grid Race 2, there were plenty of accidents on the first lap. However Muhammad Ibrahim did well to come round in fourth after starting 11th. He would show great pace to get up to first, ahead of the battling Mikko Nassi and Kalen Chin from Black Wolf by the first pitstops. Ibrahim would have a straightforward pitstop and hold the lead to the end.
However, Black Arts again protested the Indian for spinning around Championship rival, Purwien on the first corner of the race. Again, Race Control held up the decision and the resulting penalty dropped Ibrahim down to second. Finnish driver Mikko Nassi would inherit the win, with Josh Puwien in third. Muhammad Ibrahim still leads the championship by 12 points from Josh Purwien with Muhammad Aleef in third. Team Flash currently heads the team championship with Black Arts Racing in second and SafeHouse in third.
