Franco Colapinto has revealed that studying Pierre Gasly’s performance during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza has been crucial for his success at the Spanish Grand Prix, where he finished in seventh place after qualifying for Q3.
Colapinto, who had been puzzled by his eighth position in Monza while Gasly surprised everyone by taking pole, took time to review the data from that session. The performance gap between both drivers grew as qualifying progressed, with Gasly consistently setting faster times at each stage.
In the qualifying sessions, Gasly showed constant improvement, particularly excelling in the final laps. Taking charge of the situation, Colapinto identified key aspects that he applied to his own driving style at the next event in Madrid.
In Madrid, the Alpine team driver was consistently faster than his teammate in qualifying, reaching Q3 despite having to abandon one of his attempts in Q2. Colapinto described the qualifying in Madrid as one of his best performances, highlighting his ability to manage speed on a tricky track.
“I have been very happy with the performance and the results we achieved, especially on a track like this where it’s easy to make mistakes,” Colapinto commented after the race. He also emphasized the impact of the lessons learned from Gasly. “I was able to maximize every opportunity, and the work I did following Monza has contributed a lot to my performance here,” he concluded.
