Christian Rasmussen, driver for Ed Carpenter Racing, has achieved the best performance of his career in IndyCar qualifying with a spectacular fourth place for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix. The event took place on a temporary 1.7-mile street circuit with seven turns around the National Mall in Washington.
The 26-year-old Dane saved his best time for last. As the last driver to go out during the Fast Six qualifying session, Rasmussen posted an astonishing time of 57.8892 seconds with his Chevrolet number 21, thus securing a spot on the second row for Sunday’s race.
This performance marks the best qualifying result of his career, surpassing his previous best of a fifth place at Mid-Ohio this season. Additionally, it is only his second time making it to the Fast Six this year.
Despite the excellent result, Rasmussen acknowledged that he could have still improved his time. ‘Honestly, my lap could have been better,’ he said. ‘It’s very difficult to start last with this format and without heat in the tires. It was also my first time doing a solo qualifying in a street circuit. We are very happy with the starting position. We’ve had good pace since the first practice and improved from the second as well as for qualifying. I made a small mistake in turn 5 when changing gears due to a bump; my hand slipped off the controls.’
Rasmussen highlighted the support of Ed Carpenter Racing in his development. ‘From the beginning, we’ve had a competitive car. This week we’ve worked well and made improvements from one practice to another, which is very important for us. I’m happy to have put the Splenda Stevia Chevrolet in a good position, representing these brands properly and hoping for a good race tomorrow.’
