Helio Castroneves has been drafted in to replace Oliver Askew at Arrow McLaren SP for the upcoming IndyCar Harvest GP double-header.
Arrow McLaren SP has suffered a jolt by losing Askew for next weekend’s IndyCar’s Harvest GP double-header at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The American has been declared unfit to race after medical examination done by the championship.
Arrow McLaren stated that Askew complained of balance and co-ordination issue after the Mid-Ohio race. He was subsequently examined by the IndyCar Medical Team, which declared him unfit. Nothing more has been said about his condition.
Askew, though, will be present at IMS watching Castroneves drive his #7 Chevrolet car, who returns to IndyCar after racing for Team Penske in Indy500. The Brazilian will partner Patricio O’Ward, who will continue to drive the #5 Chevrolet.
“This was an incredibly tough call but I have to follow the advice of the INDYCAR Medical Team and my doctors,” said Askew. “My priority right now is focusing on my health. Despite not being in the car, I will be at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Harvest GP, giving whatever insight and support to Arrow McLaren SP that I can.”
“The welfare of Oliver, our team members and fellow competitors is paramount,” added Arrow McLaren SP co-owner Sam Schmidt. “We therefore support Oliver and the decision of INDYCAR. Withdrawing to focus on his health and recovery is the right thing to do.”
And finally, Castroneves stated: “First and foremost, we wish Oliver the best and that he is able to take time to recover. I look forward to getting back on track and helping to build on the great progress that Arrow McLaren SP has made this year.”
