The legendary world rally champion Carlos Sainz will be behind the wheel of a Ford Puma Rally1 during the Asturias Historic Rally taking place this weekend in Spain. This event pays tribute to the long and successful career of the Spanish driver.

Sainz, winner of the championship in 1990 and 1992, will pilot the new WRC model alongside his usual co-driver, Luis Moya. The competition will consist of a total of 10 stages and will cover 126.66 timed kilometers on asphalt.

The 64-year-old driver has expressed his gratitude for the tribute this race represents for his career. ‘There’s not much time left until the Asturias Rally in Pravia. They have decided to dedicate the event to my career, which I am very grateful for. I recently mentioned there could be a surprise, and now it’s official,’ Sainz commented on social media.

In addition, Sainz highlighted the excitement he feels about returning to drive a modern competition car. ‘I will have the opportunity to drive a next-generation rally car. It has been years since I competed on asphalt, and I will also be able to test this fantastic vehicle, whose homologation expires at the end of the year,’ he added.

Throughout his career, Carlos Sainz has achieved 26 victories and 97 podiums, competing with brands such as Toyota, Subaru, Lancia, Ford, and Citroën. Since retiring from the WRC at the end of 2005, he has continued to compete in rally raid, winning the Dakar four times (2010, 2018, 2020, 2024).

Recently, Sainz has joined Ford’s program in the World Rally-Raid Championship for 2025, currently occupying the ninth position in this season’s overall standings.
