Red Bull F1 reserve Sergio Sette Camara has secured a Super Formula drive with B-Max Racing with Team Motopark for 2020 season.
Having moved away from F2 and joining hands with Red Bull and AlphaTauri in F1 as their reserve, Camara has announced that he will be going to Japan to race in Super Formula this year with B-Max Racing with Team Motopark Honda.
It is a surprise move as he replaces Pietro Fittipaldi, who was announced to drive for them alongside Charles Milesi. Camara was initially tipped to remain in F2 with Hitech GP but Luca Ghiotto took that drive alongside Nikita Mazepin.
Then, his participation in the IndyCar test with Carlin led many to believe that he would be competing with them in America. This theory was given some merit after Camara departed from his role in McLaren. But he signed up with Red Bull instead as mentioned above.
The Brazilian, though, could still drive for Carlin in IndyCar alongside Felipe Nasr, Max Chilton and Conor Daly, in what would likely be a part-time schedule. It looks less likely now but stranger things have happened in motor racing.
Camara will get into action soon as Super Formula is holding a two-day test at Fuji Speedway on March 24-25 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. For now, their opening two rounds at Suzuka and Fuji has been postponed due to the outbreak.
A revised schedule is yet to be announced. On the teams side, Honda only has nine drivers for the 2020 Super Formula season after Real Racing pulled out of the championship. At the same time, Toyota has 11 drivers across all teams.
Speaking about his drive, Camara wrote: “Despite of the difficult world moment of COVID-19 I’m happy to announce that I’ll compete in Japanese Super Formula 2020.”
