Formula 1 driver Oliver Bearman, from the Haas team, has shared his emotions after having the opportunity to drive the Lotus 97T that Ayrton Senna used to win his first race in 1985 at Silverstone. This experience brought Bearman an intense moment of shock, which brought him to tears.
In a recent appearance on the podcast F1 Beyond The Grid, Bearman recalled what his lap in this iconic car was like. The young Brit, who did not live in the same era as Senna, did his driving alongside his father and his girlfriend, as well as Senna’s former mechanic, further increasing the emotional weight of the moment.
“The most important thing is that it was the exact chassis with which Ayrton won his first race,” Bearman commented. “Driving the car with Senna’s original mechanic present was of enormous significance to me. It was a very powerful moment, especially knowing his story and the tragic end of his career. I felt very emotional, and I knew this could happen to me.”
During his driving session, Bearman was instructed to limit himself to three laps to preserve the engine, but he managed to do a fourth, seizing a moment of freedom that he described as his “glory lap”. “Suddenly I realized I didn’t want to stop, so I continued one more lap,” he explained. “It was really fun; the brakes had a bit of smoke because I was really pushing to make a great lap. It was one of the best days of my life.”
