A helmet used by the legendary Ayrton Senna during the 1992 Formula 1 season has been sold for £260,000 at auction, far exceeding initial expectations which ranged from £80,000 to £120,000.

This emblematic piece of motorsport history is being displayed for the first time at the Immaculate Collection of BUDDS Auctions, in Silverstone, during the weekend of the British Grand Prix. The helmet, manufactured by Shoei, has been certified by McLaren and verified through photographs to ensure that it was not used in the French Grand Prix.

Senna wore this helmet in several races, including the British, German, and Hungarian Grands Prix, the latter of which he won. A noteworthy curiosity is that in 1992, during the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, Senna shared the podium with Michael Schumacher and Nigel Mansell, a historic event in his career.

In addition to Senna’s helmet, the auction features a special collection from the 1992 champion, Nigel Mansell, which is expected to raise over £40,000, with all proceeds going to UK Youth. Other items in the auction include gloves, helmets, and suits signed by Mansell and other drivers, as well as various collectibles from the motorsport world.
