Andretti ready to move away from operation of team under Towriss

Michael Andretti, Andretti

Michael has moved away from the operational side of Andretti Global, after Daniel Towriss takeover of the company via Group 1001.

The news of Andretti relinquishing its bigger role at Andretti Global was first reported by Sportico, after which the company sent out a brief statement to confirm the news of Michael moving away from the operational side of the team to a more strategic role.

The details of a the new organisational structure will be shared in the coming weeks as per the note, with Andretti and Towriss to speak with the team and the employees of the company. The latter has systematically increased its investment in the last few years.

It was his increased investment via Group 1001 insurance company, that led the structure to be renamed as Andretti Global. The partnership was not just limited to its IndyCar programme, but the investment was also towards IMSA and more importantly, F1.

While the block on F1 side remains for the moment, even with General Motors/Cadillac as partners, Andretti has seen expansion on IndyCar and IMSA side of things along with its Indy NXT, Formula E and Extreme E racing programmes.

Andretti has been at the helm since 2002 and the current move could see him be more like an advisor and ambassador than a larger decision maker. “Michael’s goal has been to transition to a more strategic role with Andretti Global and focus less on the operational side of the race team,” the statement from the company said.

“Michael and Dan Towriss have been working closely on developing this new structure, one which Michael is excited to see take shape under Dan’s guidance. Michael remains engaged and will continue to serve as a strategic advisor and key ambassador. We will have more to share in the coming weeks, after Michael and Dan have had an opportunity to speak to the team.”
