Fernando Alonso reckons Aston Martin needs to better its car on Sundays to extract maximum after another points show in F1 Canadian GP.

Having started sixth in F1 Canadian GP, Aston Martin’s Alonso maintained track position ahead of Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc initially but was cleared soon enough. He then had Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg to defend from, while the likes of Haas’ Esteban Ocon and Williams’ Carlos Sainz went for one stop.

The latter two defied the chances of Yuki Tsunoda and Oliver Bearman to gain on Alonso. This pretty much solidified the Spaniard’s position inside points barring late safety car situation. He rain eighth after clearing Hulkenberg and was promoted to seventh due to Norris’ retirement.

It was another points score which allowed Aston Martin to score more in the constructors’ fight against Haas, Visa Cash App RB, Sauber and Alpine. In order to maximise further, Alonso thinks the team has to better its Sundays, which is where it lacks a bit since it looses ground.

“I think realistic of the pace, eighth was maximum, we knew that eighth would be maximum and we were eighth until Lando had a DNF and we gain seventh,” said Alonso to media. “When I saw Nico in front of Haas with 10 laps to go, I was like ‘wow’, he was very competitive, Sauber clearly made a step forward, so we need to keep the pace, if not, we will loose by the end of the season.

“But at the same time we are getting close to Haas, closer to Racing Bulls and it is going to be a nice battle until Abu Dhabi. Overall, I was really happy with the car, I mean it didn’t have any big issues apart from excessive tyre deg but still Sunday pace is not quite there in the rhythm of the weekend.

“We are sometimes one or two tenths away from the top teams in qualifying and then we are one minute in the race, so definitely Sunday is still our weak point of the weekend and we need to make some set-up work to put priority on Sunday in next few races,” summed up Alonso.
