Fernando Alonso says the Monza weekend was the best he had in F1 2023 among others, as he reckons they deserved a win too.

After a long gap, Aston Martin’s Alonso looked his old self and secured multiple podiums in a season as opposed to getting one with some luck factor. This year, he had pace to secure it on merit, even though it fizzled out by the end of the F1 season.

The year reminded him of 2012 performance wise as he termed it as one of the best seasons in his career. There were moments where he could have won too and he reckons Aston Martin did deserve to win on couple of occasions.

Amid the several podium finishes, Alonso feels the race in Monza was standout even though he finished ninth. The circuit doesn’t suits the car and so to score points there was a big moment, even bigger than the podium in Zandvoort where the car was good.

“With the personal performance, I think, together with 2012 it’s the best season for me, the best season in my driving, and I was happy with with everything,” said Alonso to media. “I was motivated, I was fit. I was happy with the performance in difficult conditions sometimes.

“Bahrain, Monaco, Canada, Monza, and Brazil will be my top five of the year. And I put Monza on purpose because it was a ninth place. It was not a podium, it was nothing that people will remember. But probably we had the slowest car in Monza, or the second slowest.

“And to be in the points, it was one of those weekends when everything was very good. Zandvoort, no because I had a good car there,” summed up Alonso, as when asked about potential wins, he counted the Dutch GP along with Monaco.

“Probably Monaco was the closest, with a tyre call change or something,” continued Alonso. “Maybe Zandvoort if we were in a different position in that restart or something. We probably had opportunities to win here and there, and yes, I believe that we deserve it more than anyone else this year.”
