The Gresini Racing rider, Alex Márquez, has announced that he will not participate in the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix due to a scheduled surgery this Monday in Madrid. This decision comes after an intense weekend in Malaysia, where he qualified in third position.

The surgical intervention aims to address the injuries sustained from his hard fall during the Catalonia Grand Prix last May. Márquez hopes to return to competition for the Portugal Grand Prix, which will be held in Portimao in three weeks.

In statements following the race, the young rider shared: ‘Since I returned from the accident in Catalonia, I have been suffering quite a bit with my right shoulder. Therefore, I decided to have the surgery, which will be tomorrow in Madrid.’ He also mentioned that during the last races he competed with painkillers, but it was not sustainable.

Márquez explained that the surgery consists of removing a plate from his collarbone and treating the existing inflammation in his shoulder. ‘The main priority is to eliminate all the inflammation and the accumulated liquid in the area, because right now I can hardly do anything,’ he stated, puzzled.

Some segments of the public have raised doubts about the timing of the operation, suggesting that the controversy surrounding the Qatar GP could influence his decision. However, Márquez has defended his choice, pointing out that the intense schedule of consecutive races has been a decisive factor for his health.

‘It was impossible for me to compete in three races in a row. This decision is to prioritize my health and come back stronger for the last two races of the season,’ concluded the rider.
