Alexander Albon explains lock-up to go off in F1 Miami GP while defending amid lowly weekend for Williams overall.

Having had a sound 2023 F1 season, Williams has been struggling of sorts so far in 2024 with no points against their name when rivals like Visa Cash App RB, Haas and even Alpine have managed to eke out at least one points result irrespective of the race.

The F1 Miami GP was another disaster of sorts for Williams. Firstly, Logan Sargeant was taken out by Kevin Magnussen, while Albon was battling hard but late lock-up to go off on worn tyres derailed his grand prix and ended any points chance that he had.

The tyres didn’t help his cause as he explained. Overall, it wasn’t the weekend and it doesn’t bodes well considering they hoped that Miami will benefit them. “We’ve been struggling all weekend; we haven’t had a smooth weekend,” said Albon. “It’s one the most challenging races, for sure, that I’ve had with the team.

“We’ve got to look and understand why it was so difficult. It’s true, we actually… if you look in reflection we didn’t have that bad pace, it’s just that the cars behind us were all on new tyres, so I was the backstop for everyone else. You can’t really hold off the guys when they’re on 25, 30-lap newer tyres than you.

“I think if we weren’t that last car, and we were a position or two ahead and there was someone else being the buffer, we would have been okay. It’s so dirty off-line. You’re defending… but you know you shouldn’t really be defending. It’s putting dirt on your tyres and when you brake, you lock up.

“It’s one of those ones where honestly… you didn’t really want to defend, but you had to [in order] to keep the position,” summed up Albon, who hasn’t been able to show his mettle so far in 2024 as he did so in 2023 with some strong results.
