Jack Aitken has been named as the new reserve driver of the ROKiT Williams Racing and will get FP1 outings in 2020 F1 season.
A day after announcing his exit from Renault F1 test role, Aitken has been confirmed as the new reserve driver of Williams, where he is get FP1 outings in 2020 season. He will also be filling up for George Russell and Nicholas Latifi, if either are unable to drive.
In addition, Aitken will be fully immersed in the simulator programme along with marketing activities at the factory as well as during the F1 grand prix in 2020. “It is a great honour to join ROKiT Williams Racing as their Reserve Driver for the 2020 season,” he said.
“Williams is a team with strong heritage, and continued longevity, and I’m looking forward to directly contributing to their development through my simulator and testing work.” At the same time, deputy team principal Claire Williams added:
“It is obvious from what Jack has achieved so far he is a young driver with a great career ahead of him and we believe he has the right credentials to reach the top in the sport. Jack has proved his ability in FIA Formula 2 and GP3 and we look forward to seeing what he can achieve as the team’s Official Reserve Driver.”
Besides Russell and Latifi, Williams already has host of young drivers in their line-up with Daniel Ticktum, Roy Nissany and Jamie Chadwick. Among all, only Nissany is confirmed for FP1 runs along with Ticktum, with the Israeli and Ticktum also to race in F2.
It seems like Aitken won’t be competing in 2020 as the release has no mention of him continuing in F2 with Campos Racing or joining any other team. It remains to be seen if he will solely be Williams reserve or have a dual role, where he can race elsewhere too.
