Petronas Yamaha SRT’s Fabio Quartararo ended the Jerez MotoGP test on top from LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow and Petronas Yamaha’s Franco Morbidelli
After the heartbreak in the Spanish GP where Quartararo retired from second in the early stages of the grand prix, the Frenchman hung on well in the Jerez MotoGP test with a best of 1m36.379s to end the day on top, completing 73 laps in all.
He beat Crutchlow (1m36.797s), who completed 78 laps with Quartararo’s teammate Morbidelli (1m37.093s) ending up third after a late improvement with 82 laps in all. He pushed KTM’s Pol Esparagro (1m37.114s) to fourth, who did 63 laps.
Another one to improve late was Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales (1m37.226s) to be fifth as he demoted Suzuki’s Joan Mir (1m37.233s) to sixth ahead of Spanish GP winner and Honda’s Marc Marquez (1m37.260s) the trio doing 94, 84 and 75 laps respectively.
Suzuki’s Alex Rins (1m37.275s) was pushed to eighth with Honda’s Jorge Lorenzo (1m37.466s) in ninth and LCR Honda’s Takaaki Nakagami (1m37.468s) rounding out the Top 10 with the trio completing 69, 93 and 63 laps respectively.
Ducati’s leading man Andrea Dovizioso (1m37.601s) was 11th with 52 laps to be ahead of Pramac Ducati of Francesco Bagnaia (1m37.698s) & Jack Miller (1m37.701s) with Danilo Petrucci (1m37.720s) completing the Ducati sandwich in 14th.
Bagnaia did 60 laps to Miller’s 80 and Petrucci’s 61. Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro (1m37.758s) was 15th from KTM’s Johann Zarco (1m37.895s) with Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi (1m38.056s) only 17th – the trio did 80, 71 and 74 laps respectively.
Avintia Ducati’s Tito Rabat (1m38.061s) and Karel Abraham (1m38.075s) ended up 18th and 19th with 79 and 67 laps, as Aprilia’s tester rider Bradley Smith (1m38.077s) was 20th with Tech 3 Yamaha’s Miguel Oliveira (1m38.649s) in 21st.
Smith completed 82 laps to Oliveira’s 77. Tech 3’s Hafizh Syahrin (1m39.053s) and Suzuki’s tester Sylvain Guintoli (1m39.637s) rounded out the 23 riders with 57 and 79 laps to their name as Aprilia’s Andrea Iannone was unable to ride despite trying to.
The Petronas Yamaha riders weren’t testing any particular new parts but the factory team were checking the throttle connection and electronics. Also working on the electronics was Crutchlow with the factory Honda’s Marquez running Stefan Bradl’s bike.
Lorenzo had a new seat but suffered multiple crashes in Turn 6 and Turn 11. In the crash list was Nakagami at Turn 3 with Mir at Turn 9. His teammate tried the new swing arm on the Suzuki but it broke even though Rins did not have any crash.
