Laurin Heinrich experienced an intense day during the Motul SportsCar Endurance Grand Prix at Road America, where he achieved a surprising second place that keeps his hopes alive for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar championship title, reducing his deficit to 108 points.
The German driver, competing with the JDC-Miller Motorsports team in the Porsche 963, took advantage of the stressful situations at the end of the race to secure his fifth podium of the season. This result marked a significant change after the championship leader, Jack Aitken, was forced to retire from the competition due to an accident with Kevin Estre’s Porsche, which was also battling for top positions.
Heinrich approached the race with a 203-point gap to Aitken, but the Englishman’s accident, who finished ninth, opened new possibilities for the last two races of the season.
This second position was achieved under complicated circumstances. JDC-Miller Motorsports faced several penalties for mechanical restrictions due to damage to the bodywork. At one point, a sudden opening caused the co-driver’s door to unexpectedly open, due to the intense internal pressure in the cockpit.
“There was so much pressure in the cockpit that the door exploded,” Heinrich stated after the race. “It felt like a submarine had exploded! We repaired the vehicle in the pit window, had good recoveries, and maintaining our composure allowed us to rise to the podium, which is positive for the championship,” he added.
Heinrich highlighted that keeping composure was key in a race marked by the stress of competition. Reflecting on his performance, he commented: “If those around you lose their calm and you keep yours, that’s the key to endurance racing. You have to carry it through to the end.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming races, Heinrich is preparing to face a sprint speed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which will be followed by the Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. Despite his 108-point deficit, the driver is optimistic and claims that the competition is still undecided.
“Jack’s lead was considerable… but it’s never over until it’s over. Results like this change a lot… with two races left, I know that in Indianapolis anything can happen,” Heinrich concluded, showing his commitment to the competition and to upcoming opportunities to race with two different teams.
