George Russell, driver for Mercedes, finds himself in a complicated situation in his fight for the title of the 2026 season. Former F1 race engineer, Rob Smedley, has pointed out that Russell is “thinking too much” about his performance and has recommended that he reconnect with his natural rhythm to close the gap with his teammate, Kimi Antonelli.

In an episode of the High Performance Racing podcast, Smedley, along with former Alpine director, Otmar Szafnauer, analyzed the growing difference between the two Mercedes drivers and the team dynamics in Brackley. Smedley emphasized that Antonelli is operating in a “flow state” that allows him to achieve results without excessive effort.

“You need to be in a flow state. Kimi is currently in that state; when he gets in the car, he just does it naturally. He doesn’t overthink it and therefore doesn’t exceed his limits; everything flows for him,” Smedley commented. According to him, Russell would need to adjust his mindset to make the most of his potential.

Russell, who started the season with a win at the Australian Grand Prix and a victory in the sprint race in China, was positioned as one of the favorites for the title. However, a series of unfortunate results, combined with the remarkable performance of his young teammate, have allowed Antonelli to extend his lead in the championship.

After the first half of the season, Antonelli leads the standings with 219 points, followed by seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton with 169 points, while Russell occupies third place with 160 points.
