Mercedes has planned more updates for the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season, but its director, Toto Wolff, has indicated that the best timing for their introduction must be taken into account.
The new regulations have caused significant changes in the rankings, with Mercedes dominating the first races, winning the first six grands prix, before being surpassed by Ferrari and McLaren in the following five events.
Wolff has expressed his concern that some teams, such as Ferrari, have implemented substantial updates aggressively. Currently, Mercedes has focused on small improvements, with its only major update made during the Canadian Grand Prix.
“We need to be very strategic about when to bring the updates,” Wolff stated after the Hungarian race. He remarked that the timing of these improvements’ impact on the team’s performance needs to be analyzed.
One of the uncertainties is the possible penalties that Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell could face for excessive use of power units, as both are approaching the limit established by the regulations. Antonelli and Russell are expected to receive penalties based on their engines used so far.
The team’s deputy director, Bradley Lord, has acknowledged that it seems inevitable that some penalties will need to be accepted by the end of the season, a strategy that will need to be managed carefully in the upcoming races.
