Charles Leclerc, Ferrari driver, finally achieved a victory at Silverstone after a difficult period, a success that is cited as a potential turning point for his career.
Leclerc took the lead early in the race in Northamptonshire, dominating the competition until achieving his first victory since the Austin round in 2024. The fight of championship leader Kimi Antonelli was frustrated by a problem with his wheel protector.
A notable improvement
The contrast between his performance and that of another Ferrari driver, Lewis Hamilton, who is recently in good form, is evident. Hamilton attributed part of his similar performance to the suspension of the simulator at Maranello, while Leclerc struggled with various inconveniences.
In the Monaco GP, the Monegasque driver suffered an accident while in third position, blaming the brakes, although the supplier Brembo disagreed. Later, he had another setback in the Barcelona qualifying and a hydraulic issue that left him out of the race.
In Austria, Leclerc qualified second, but the lack of race pace in the Ferrari led him to a disappointing eighth position.
Confidence regained
After the victory at Silverstone, Ferrari director Fred Vasseur expressed that he had always been optimistic regarding Leclerc’s potential, despite the unfavorable circumstances he had faced until then.
“I have always been positive about Charles because in the data he was there, consistently good, and today he has paid off with an excellent result,” said Vasseur.
The key to Leclerc’s improvement was the work on the car’s set-up and a switch to the brake discs from Carbone Industrie used by Hamilton. Vasseur believes that the victory will give a significant boost to Leclerc’s confidence.
“Today’s result is the best boost he can have in the first place,” said Vasseur. “It’s crucial that he has been very consistent throughout the race today. The first 20 laps were key to stay within a tenth or two of the pace,” he added.
A step forward
Leclerc explained that the adjustments made after the sprint race that left him in fifth position contributed to his confidence with the Ferrari SF-26.
“This was much better. I am very proud of the work we have done,” he said. “I have to focus and ignore the external noise, as I am not a bad driver overnight. It’s a process of finding the fit with the car.”
Leclerc admitted that he has experienced a drop in performance, but now he feels reaffirmed after this victory. The Spa-Francorchamps circuit, where he achieved his first victory in F1 in 2019, will be the next opportunity to confirm if his return to form is genuine.
