Driver Mick Schumacher has seen his hopes of securing a spot among the top twelve in the IndyCar Grand Prix of Indianapolis vanish in an incident that ended with a penalty.
Starting from the eighteenth position, Schumacher made a remarkable race, being well positioned in tenth place with just three laps to go. His battle for 11th place led him to collide with Santino Ferrucci, spinning him in the 8-9 section of the track.
Although the maneuver was deemed accidental, race control penalized Schumacher with a drive-through. This error caused him to drop to twentieth position, also losing 11 crucial points in the standings.
Acknowledging his mistake, Schumacher stated that he was trying to make an overtake and did not anticipate that Ferrucci would brake so much. With his sights set on the Indianapolis 500, which will take place in two weeks, the RLL Racing driver will seek to rectify the situation during the scheduled practice and qualifying sessions. He will be one of the four rookies in this edition, along with Dennis Hauger, Caio Collet, and Jacob Abel.
His team will be able to provide additional support with the addition of two-time 500-mile winner Takuma Sato.
