Marc Marquez scores first pole with Ducati in MotoGP in Spanish GP, ahead of Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin.
Q1:
It was wet conditions in first part of MotoGP qualifying in Spanish GP at Jerez as KTM’s Jack Miller was forced to sit in the pits for longer due to rear wheel issue. He eventually made it out but was a lap behind his rivals, who ran mostly throughout the session.
The times at the front did tumble as the session progressed in tricky conditions. It was Pramac Ducati’s Franco Morbidelli on the top with a 1m147.887s to make it in Q2, with KTM’s Brad Binder (1m47.949s) only 0.062s to go along with him.
LCR Honda’s Johann Zarco showed good pace in wet conditions to be third and start the sprint and main race from 13th. Trackhouse Aprilia’s Miguel Oliveira was 14th from Miller, who was frustrated after having an up and down session.
Wildcard Dani Pedrosa was 16th on the KTM, with Trackhouse’s Raul Fernandez in 17th from GASGAS Tech 3’s Augusto Fernandez, wildcard Stefan Bradl (Honda) and Honda’s Joan Mir in the Top 20, with the Aprilia wildcard Lorenzo Savadori 21st.
The other Honda of Luca Marini was 22nd from the first Yamaha of Fabio Quartararo only 23rd with teammate Alex Rins in 25th behind LCR’s Takaaki Nakagami.
Q2:
It was still wet to start the second part of MotoGP qualifying in Spanish GP but dry patches started to appear. It was jam-packed to start the session with Binder setting the pace at the front with a 1m47.807s lap ahead of Gresini Ducati’s Marc Marquez.
Pramac’s Jorge Martin was third from Tech3’s Pedro Acosta and VR46 Ducati’s Fabio di Giannantonio in the Top 5, as riders had different tyre choices whether medium and or soft – but all remaining on the wet compound rather than braving on the slicks.
The second run saw Acosta trying to go hard with a fast lap but had a minor fall which disrupted his run. He managed to get going but it was too late, as Marquez continued his fine run to eventually take MotoGP pole in Spanish GP with a 1m46.773s lap.
It is his first pole wit Ducati but there was some frustration after a moment at Turn 1, having set the pole lap. He led VR46’s Marco Bezzecchi, who finally found some qualifying form, as Martin chipped in with a front row finish in third.
Binder was fourth after demoting di Giannantonio to fifth, as Gresini’s Alex Marquez managed to pip Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia for sixth. Morbidelli was eighth having come through Q1 to Q2, as Ducati’s Enea Bastianini could only manage ninth.
After the minor drop, Acosta was 10th still ahead of the Aprilia pair of Maverick Vinales ans Aleix Espargaro.
