Fernando Alonso wants to be owner of his destiny amid F1 future decision as he has always been, as he adds on having wanted to be a mechanic.

Alonso has always been questioned for the choices he has made in his F1 career which hasn’t turned out to be good for his career in terms of championships unlike Lewis Hamilton whose two choices has yielded titles for him thus far.

Even if he hasn’t secured titles in F1 and or won in IndyCar, Alonso has done so in WEC with Toyota and even performed decently in Dakar. The bigger point is of having his destiny in his own hands which is true for Alonso, as it is always him in the decision situation.

It is the same now when he can either re-sign with Aston Martin if he continues in F1, or take up options like Mercedes and or Red Bull. “I’ve been always that way,” said Alonso. “Sometimes it did help me, sometimes it did hurt me, to be the owner of my destiny.

“I chose when to go from a team, when to join a team, I chose when to stop Formula 1, and I chose when to come back. And now I’ll choose, what I do next year, I’ll not follow what others do and they dictate my destiny, I’ll do it on my own.

“For good or bad, it is the way,” summed up Alonso, who recalled his McLaren signing scene which he states to highlight that he has always been like this where he has chosen things to do according to his will and not on how situations play out.

He adds that F1 wasn’t even on his mind initially as he never thought he will make it in. “I was young, I won the first world championship, and I signed with McLaren,” said Alonso. “We announced it one year before moving there. I was 24. So it didn’t change with the age. I was always like that, Formula 1 for me was not a priority, I was racing in Go-Karts and I thought to be a Go-Kart mechanic all my life.

“Even Formula 1 seemed like not really appealing for me, it was just too high, I was like not at that level or status, I was just a normal guy from North of Spain which seems really nothing to do with Formula 1. I enjoy motorsport in general, driving any car like cross-car, Dakar Rally, endurance or IndyCar, Formula 1 is just top of motorsport.

“These fantastic cars, you learn so much from the people that work here, they are so clever, they are so professional and everything is fantastic, so it is quite addictive but I still not consider myself into this environment and much more normal than this high class,” summed up Alonso, who will not until summer to decide his future F1 move.

His priority of course remains Aston Martin, even though there are rumbles about Mercedes and Red Bull. “I don’t want to wait maybe until summer because I think that will be unfair for me and the team if they have to find more options and things like that,” said Alonso.

“But I don’t want to rush as well and to make a decision while my head is not into next year. As I said, my head is so focused now on the things that I would love to test on the car after the learnings of the first few events. Everything is so exciting about the performance that if I need to think about next year like this, now is not the right time to think.

“I think I’m here because Sebastian retired that weekend of Budapest. If Sebastian got to an agreement with Aston and kept racing for few more years, I will not have this possibility. So after the announcement I spoke with Lawrence, I understood more about the project that obviously when you are not in the team, you only know from the outside some of the news.

“The factory, the wind tunnel, the future commitments. And it was very appealing, and it was very attractive. And at the same time in Alpine we had that scenario that didn’t make any progress for many months. So it was very clear for me. For the future, the first office that I will go to is Aston Martin’s office, and that will be my priority, my loyalty to them.

“And I’m thankful for the opportunity they gave me two years ago. If we get to an agreement, that will be the decision if I keep racing. If I don’t reach an agreement with Aston Martin I will look elsewhere. But that will be the second opportunity,” summed up Alonso.
