Johann Zarco suffered the most number of crashes in 2019 while Le Mans saw the most number of falls, as Austrian GP was voted as best MotoGP weekend.
Zarco had the most number of crashes in the 2019 MotoGP season despite not having raced for full season, as he started the year with KTM and ended with LCR Honda, having missed two rounds in between, to race in 17 of the 19 weekends.
Zarco had 17 crashes in all, which was eight more than what he had in 2018. Pramac Racing Ducati’s Jack Miller was second in the MotoGP list with 15 as rookie teammate Francesco Bagnaia and Honda’s Marc Marquez were tied on 14.
This was the Spaniard least number of crashes in a year since 2015. In overall terms, Moto3’s Tom Booth-Amos topped the crash list with 22, followed by Can Oncu with 21 as Moto2’s Sam Lowes had 20 with Marco Bezzecchi having 18 – all above Zarco.
The Moto2 champion and Marc’s brother Alex had 12 crashes. On the other end, the MotoGP list had Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso with just the four crashes while Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales and Petronas SRT’s Fabio Quartararo were tied on six.
Matching Dovizioso was – to-be MotoGP rider – Moto2’s Brad Binder, while Moto3 had Marco Ramirez, Jakub Kornfeil and Romano Fenati with six each. Among the circuits, Le Mans saw the most number of falls at 90 across all the categories during a weekend.
Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona and Phillip Island were tied at 73 while MotorLand Aragon had only 15 in total. The list behind the Top 3 was completed by: Misano (69), Jerez (57), Valencia (57), Assen (55), Losail (51), Sepang (50) and Brno (59).
In overall terms, the total number of crashes across MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 categories did not rise above the 1000 mark for the first time since the 2015 season, with 971 in all as compared to 1077 in 2018.
Aside the crashes, the Austrian GP at Red Bull Ring was voted as the best grand prix of the 2019 MotoGP season by the IRTA and ratified by the Grand Prix Commission, where nearly 200,000 fans attended the race. It is the second time it got this award after 2016.
