Seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher and his family are not moving out of their home in Geneva to relocate to Mallorca in Spain.
Swiss magazine L’Illustre quoted Mayoress Katia Rouarch that Schumacher will relocate to a mansion in Spain, previously owned by Real Madrid President Florentino Perez that he put on sale after his wife’s death.
It was then bought by Schumacher’s wife Corinna for approximately 30 million euros, but not for relocation purpose. She bought the Villa Yasmin for holidaying with kids Mick and Gina Maria. Mallorca has a significant German presence where Michael used to holiday too.
German publication Bild connected with Schumacher’s longtime manager Sabine Kehm when she clarified the miscommunication on the magazine’s part. “The Schumacher family does not plan to move to Mallorca,” she said.
The municipality of Andratx has also now come out to clear the air on the statement made by Rouarch to the Swiss magazine, which they say was misunderstood and taken into a different context.
“In reference to the latest news related to Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher, his family, and the municipality of Andratx, the Town Hall of Andratx wants to clear that the words attributed to Mayoress Katia Rouarch are not correct and are probably the result of misinterpretation or misunderstanding, perhaps due to language translation,” it said.
“The Mayoress of Andratx, in a recent interview for the Swiss magazine l’lllustre, confirmed the information already known that the Schumacher family bought a house in Port d’Andratx.
“She did however not give any information about a potential relocation of Michael Schumacher and/or his family in our municipality of Andratx. In fact, our Mayoress doesn’t have any information about it.
“Our Mayoress Rouarch didn’t say that we were preparing to receive Schumacher and that the local security services have been informed about this arrival. The only thing that Rouarch declared to the journalists was that, ‘in case the family decides to move here, we will be prepared for their arrival.
“In this case they would be treated as any other citizen of Andratx’. These words don’t mean that Michael Schumacher and his family are going to move here, and much less that the mayoress or the City Council has knowledge of it.
“With this communication we want to reiterate these words were meant just in case the family come here. Obviously, in that case, Michael Schumacher and his family would be welcomed in our municipality.”
Since Schumacher’s skiing incident in 2013, he has been confined to the hospital and then his home in Switzerland. Less has been publicly released about his health with only Kehm speaking on behalf of the family.
His son Mick though continues to compete with the aim to reach F1. He races for Prema in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship and took his first win at Spa-Francorchamps – his first-ever F3 victory in the one and half years of racing in the category.
