Red Bull owner and founder Dietrich Mateschitz has passed away, aged 78-years, after a long battle with illness.

As Red Bull and AlphaTauri readies itself for the F1 US GP qualifying session, news broke about the death of the energy drinks giants Mateschitz – aged 78-years – after a long battle with illness as reported by its own portal SpeedWeek.

They carried an obituary for Mateschitz, who is survived by his son Mark Gerhardter. The Austrian co-founded Red Bull GmbH along with Chaleo Yoovidhya in 1984 and eventually launched the brand in 1987 in his home country in Austria.

They soon made it a world famous energy drinks company as Mateschitz looked into sports to market Red Bull. Motor racing became one of its key promotion areas with F1 taking centerstage when they partnered with Sauber in 2001.

In 2005, Mateschitz bought Jaguar Racing and re-branded it as the current championship winning Red Bull team, while he partnered with Gerhard Berger to takeover Minardi in 2005 and re-brand it as Toro Rosso, who currently run as AlphaTauri.
