Nico Rosberg got pole position ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton. His rival for 2nd place in the championship, Sebastian Vettel, was 3rd.
All drivers except for Hamilton had to use the soft tyres in Q1. Rosberg was fastest followed by Vettel, Hamilton, Bottas and Kvyat. The eliminated drivers were Alonso, Nasr, Rossi, Stevens and Button, who couldn’t even take part in qualifying due to the engine issues he had in FP3.
Hamilton took first place in Q2 ahead of Vettel, Rosberg, Bottas and Kvyat, while Sainz, Grosjean, Maldonado, Ericsson and Räikkönen were eliminated.
Some raindrops started falling on the track at the end of Q2, which got everybody in a rush to go on track in Q3. Finally, the rain didn’t show up and Rosberg took pole position ahead of Hamilton. Top 10 was completed by Vettel, Kvyat, Ricciardo, Bottas, Massa, Verstappen, Pérez and Hülkenberg.
