Norris and Verstappen: a future in Le Mans 2027 with obstacles

The recent presentation of the Formula 1 calendar for 2027 has opened up the possibility for Grand Prix drivers to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans next year. With a schedule of 24 races that includes a week margin between the monaguesque competition and the legendary French race, the weekend of June 12 and 13 appears as key dates for the endurance event.

Although avoiding a date clash between the two events, the participation of drivers such as Max Verstappen or Lando Norris in Le Mans is not guaranteed. Various factors must come into play for them to become the first active Grand Prix drivers to compete in the famous race since Fernando Alonso’s participation.

The obstacles of the Le Mans test day

Despite the fact that the Le Mans race does not directly coincide with F1 races, the situation is more complicated. The Le Mans test day, set for June 6, falls exactly on the weekend of the Monaco Grand Prix.

According to sporting regulations, participation in the test day is mandatory for rookie drivers, who must complete 10 laps, including five timed, at the Circuit de la Sarthe. With a calendar that coincides with the most significant event in Formula 1, this generates several logistical problems.

Options for participation

F1 drivers do not need to participate mandatorily in the test day. According to the regulations, a Platinum driver competing in another championship can request an exemption from the ACO Sporting Committee. If granted, they must complete the mandatory laps during Wednesday’s practice sessions.

There are precedents for this exemption; in 2021, Robin Frijns was excused from participating in the test day due to his commitments in Formula E, despite being a rookie. Drivers like Nolan Siegel and Kyffin Simpson were also exempt in 2024.

The logistics between races

Theoretically, Norris or Verstappen could participate in both Le Mans and the Monaco Grand Prix, traveling to Le Mans on Saturday night after qualifying. They would need to complete the test day and fly quickly to the monaguesque event on Sunday morning.

However, even though McLaren Racing shows flexibility in its logistics, the situation with Norris and his teammate, Oscar Piastri, could be more complicated, especially with the added sprint on Saturday of the Grand Prix. Every position counts in an already intense weekend.

Regarding team participation

For Verstappen, Norris, or Alonso to race in Le Mans, team line-ups will need to be adjusted. One option would be the inclusion of a third car focused on Le Mans, as Porsche has done in the past.

However, attracting this third vehicle is complicated, especially for new teams like Ford and McLaren that are entering the Hypercar category. The current strategy takes precautions against the effort required to operate a new team.

Preparations for the race

Even resolving the previous difficulties, drivers will need more time on track before the start of the Le Mans race. Norris has made significant progress in this direction, having recently participated in McLaren’s tests at the Algarve circuit.

Despite these opportunities, preparing an F1 driver for the conditions of the World Endurance Championship is essential, as it is necessary to be familiar with the sporting procedures that will be different.

Alternatives to Le Mans

For Verstappen, there are more viable options like the 24 Hours of Nurburgring and the 24 Hours of Spa, which do not coincide with the F1 calendar for 2027. Verstappen has already shown interest in these races and is looking to explore new opportunities outside F1.

Thus, while the Le Mans race may be appealing, team planning and driver priorities will play a crucial role in its feasibility. Perhaps the 2028 date will be more feasible, with more experience under the belts of the involved teams and drivers.
