MotoGP will introduce specific qualifying sessions every weekend

MotoGP intends to implement two qualifying sessions during each competition weekend, one for the main race and another for the sprint race, inspired by the Formula 1 model.

This proposal has already been discussed in a dialogue forum that includes teams, the championship organization, and manufacturers. Approval is expected in the coming days, with the goal of implementing it next season.

Currently, MotoGP uses a single qualifying session that determines the grid for both races. In contrast, Formula 1 has adopted this format at events with sprint races, with ten of these scheduled for next year, increasing from six in 2026.

Although the new measure has been well received by most parties involved, its incorporation into the regulations will have to follow the appropriate procedural channels.

Before formalizing the details, a review of the race weekend calendar is required. The MotoGP sprint race is expected to take place in the afternoon, unlike Formula 1, which occurs on Saturday mornings.

Furthermore, it is being considered that the qualifying sessions be divided into three parts – Q1, Q2, and Q3 – contrary to the current two-phase system, which consists of Q1 and Q2.

It is worth noting that the idea of introducing sprint races in MotoGP first emerged four years ago at the Spielberg Circuit, coinciding with the debut of the format in Formula 1.

Recently, riders have expressed concern over the level of stress and risks associated with the current format, which includes only one free practice session before qualifying, creating a divide between those who move directly to the second phase and those who must go through the initial phase.
