Netflix has confirmed the release of its new documentary about Formula 1, which will focus on Michael Schumacher’s first championship season, on October 2, 2026.
Named Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend, the feature-length documentary was initially presented during a Netflix session in Germany and adds to the growing motorsport catalog of the platform, which includes the popular documentary series Drive to Survive.
This production, which will be in German, will address Schumacher’s transformation from being considered a novice to achieving his first world title at the age of 25 during the 1994 season. The documentary will also cover the tragic race weekend at Imola, which cost the lives of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger.
Directed by Christin Freitag and produced by LEONINE Documentaries, the documentary will feature contributions from Corinna Schumacher, the driver’s wife, as well as other close individuals.
The documentary’s synopsis highlights the importance of 1994 in the history of Formula 1: Schumacher’s first victory in Brazil marked the beginning of an unprecedented career. That season was marked by dramatic events such as the fatal accident of Ayrton Senna and several controversies surrounding the competition.
Corinna Schumacher, who has always been his emotional support, will share reflections on the beginnings of their love story, which endures to this day.
