Mercedes starts development for 2027 with a good lead in 2026

Mercedes has placed itself 145 points ahead of its closest competitors in the Formula 1 constructors’ championship for 2026, a lead that team principal Toto Wolff considers very comfortable. This allows the German team to shift its focus toward developing the car for 2027.

After a complicated period during the ground effect era in F1, the Silver Arrows have dominated the 2026 regulations, leading the constructors’ standings alongside Ferrari and having Kimi Antonelli at the top of the drivers’ championship.

So far, Mercedes has managed to win 10 of the 14 races held, despite rivals like McLaren and Ferrari introducing significant improvements to their cars. The team presented updates at the Canadian Grand Prix in May and plans to install a new parts package at the Bahrain Grand Prix in October.

Wolff has confirmed that the team has already begun reallocating resources toward the 2027 project, stating that this work started before the summer. ‘We have changed resources for next year, and this will continue according to plan, regardless of our position in the championship,’ said Wolff.

Despite their current lead, the Mercedes director keeps his feet on the ground. Wolff warned that things can change quickly with two unfortunate races that could make the lead less comfortable. ‘We need to ignore points until it is mathematically impossible for them to win,’ he added.

To improve their performance, Mercedes has a ‘solid upgrade’ that will be presented in Malaysia. Although the arrival of new parts may bring complications, Wolff is confident that the updates will enhance the team’s performance, aiming to maintain their dominant position.
