Maya Weug, one of the standout figures in the F1 Academy championship, has stated that 2026 has become the «toughest» year of her career. The driver faces significant difficulties in securing a competition seat, a year after battling for the title in the exclusive women’s competition.
In an emotional message shared on social media, Weug has outlined the harsh realities of the motorsport industry. After a successful 2025 season, in which she achieved three victories and nine podiums, she now finds herself in a complicated situation.
«I don’t know how to express it. I’ve tried to showcase the positive aspects throughout the season, but the truth is this has been my hardest year so far,» Weug wrote.
Weug came just short of the 2025 title, won by Doriane Pin. While the champion receives a funded competition seat in another single-seater category, Weug had the chance to test a Ferrari 296 GT3 with AF Corse, also sponsored by the F1 Academy.
«There was a great plan for this season,» she commented. «Just before it started, everything fell apart for reasons beyond my control. At that point, it was too late to look for alternatives, and it has been very difficult to secure competitions on my own.»
Despite the obstacles, she has been able to participate in three Belcar races, thanking ART Racing for the opportunity. «We finished on the podium in my debut with a GT car, but the upcoming 24 Hours of Zolder race is no longer happening, so right now I don’t have any races on the horizon.»
Despite the difficulties, Weug keeps her options open. Currently, she serves as a coach for driver Alba Larsen, who is supported by Ferrari, and spends time collaborating with engineers.
«I’ve kept working. Training outdoors with Alba and others, as well as dedicating time to engineering. I’ve learned a lot and grown as a person this year,» she added.
«But I don’t want to just be watching. I want to race. I want to get back on track at the highest level and show what I’m capable of. This is my aspiration for the rest of my life and I work every day to get back behind the wheel.»
Weug concludes by acknowledging that motorsport is a tough environment and expressing her disappointment at the lack of support despite her previous successes. «Thank you to everyone who has supported me during these tough times. When one door closes, another opens, and I choose to believe in that. If you are a team, a partner, or know someone I should talk to, please get in touch. I will return to the track.»
