James Vowles highlights Madrid as a possible major event for Formula 1

The director of the Williams team, James Vowles, has expressed his support for Madrid as one of the most promising events in Formula 1, despite the difficulties experienced during the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring track.

The race, held last weekend, presented numerous logistical challenges, common in new tracks. However, Vowles praised the organizers and stated that the event was not chaotic as often happens in these early editions.

In a recent episode of ‘The Vowles Verdict’, Vowles noted that Madrid could become a reference in the future: ‘It is only half an hour from the city center, a capital, and ten minutes by metro. There is a huge space, probably ten times larger than other circuits, which has its advantages and disadvantages. It’s positive for capacity, but it requires a lot of walking between areas.’

Despite the optimism, he also admitted that the circuit had shortcomings regarding overtaking opportunities, which has generated demands for changes for the upcoming 2027 edition to increase excitement in the races.

Vowles emphasized that the layout was technically challenging, a challenge that drivers found stimulating. However, the competition was affected, and he expressed confidence that the organizers would work to improve this aspect in the future.

Regarding the performance of the Williams team, Vowles acknowledged the difficulties the team faced during the race. He stressed that they have not achieved the expected performance and that the lack of improvements to the vehicle has complicated their competitiveness.

Vowles also mentioned the tire strategy during the race, appreciating the work done by Pirelli to provide the appropriate tires for the event. With the optimistic spirit that characterizes his perspective, he concluded with recognition to the organizers for their work and looking forward to an improved upcoming edition.
