The head of the Williams team, James Vowles, has expressed his support for the recent Formula 1 Grand Prix in Madrid, which had a complicated start at the new track.
The competition took place at the new Madring circuit during the past weekend. Although events on urban circuits often experience logistical issues, Vowles praised the organization of the event.
«First of all, I want to congratulate the organizers,» Vowles commented in a recent episode of the show ‘The Vowles Verdict’. «This is the first year of the grand prix and that usually implies that the event is a bit chaotic, but that hasn’t been the case in Madrid.»
The Williams director highlighted that the Madrid Grand Prix could become one of the most attractive events on the calendar. «It is located half an hour from the city center, a capital, and just ten minutes by metro. There is a great space, probably ten times more than we are used to having,» he added.
Despite the positive aspects, the circuit received criticism for its lack of overtaking opportunities, which has generated a debate on what modifications might be necessary for the 2027 edition. «As could be seen, the track is very technical and the drivers have commented that it was a difficult yet enjoyable challenge,» Vowles explained.
«But the race also had some difficulties, and I am sure the organizers will work to improve it next year,» he added. Referring to his own performance, he acknowledged that Williams knew it would be a tough GP, and emphasized that the team has not managed to improve the car’s performance for a long time.
Vowles indicated that the tires showed excessive wear during the race, affecting performance, but defended Pirelli’s work with the hard tires, which worked well throughout most of the competition. «The main challenge now is to find ways to facilitate more overtaking in future events,» he concluded.
