The NASCAR race held last Sunday at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway started with a turbulent beginning due to the severe weather affecting the competition.
Initially, the start of the race was moved up an hour in an attempt to avoid an approaching storm. However, adverse conditions arrived sooner than expected, forcing a delay to the competition until it almost reached the original start time.
The situation became complicated when Carson Hocevar went off the track during the pace lap, an incident that highlighted that the conditions would be a determining factor throughout the race.
Fortunately, the track dried as the competition progressed, turning what could have been a disastrous evening into a fun and highly tactical night of racing. Kyle Larson, who finished fifth, explained why he enjoyed his experience in New Hampshire.
«It was a lot of fun. We knew the track would go through changes,» Larson said after the race. «During the wet phase, you were just trying to manage the tire temperature while it dried. That was important. Once we switched to slicks, we were looking for dry spots. I think both Bell and I did our best in that regard.»
Larson noted that once conditions stabilized, the race returned to the typical normality of Loudon. «It was good to get the stage win. From there, it was just another Loudon. I felt pretty good. We made some adjustments and, obviously, we still have to improve a bit, but it was a good day for us.»
Despite not having won a Cup Series race since May of last year, Larson has maintained remarkable consistency. With his performance on Sunday, he climbed to seventh place in the overall standings, staying close to championship contention with just one race remaining before the start of the Chase.
«I hope we can continue building on this,» Larson added. «We still have a long way to grow and be able to lead laps consistently and race for wins. It’s positive to have good finishes these last two weeks. We just have to keep working; we’ve been doing this for the last two years, and it seems like it’s finally going to pay off.»
This year has been quite confusing for Larson, who has achieved at least three wins in each season since joining Hendrick Motorsports in 2021. However, he has yet to celebrate a victory this year.
On Sunday, he achieved his ninth top-five finish of the season, a testament to his consistency despite the lack of wins. It seems that victory could be close for Larson. If he can string together a good streak at the start of the Chase, he could defend his title and secure the third championship of his career, thus becoming the tenth driver in NASCAR history to achieve consecutive victories.
