Former IndyCar and NASCAR racer John Andretti has lost the battle against cancer as he dies at the age of 56-years, on Thursday.

John Andretti was the older brother of racer Adam and first cousin of Michael, Jeff and Marco, while Mario was his nephew. His father Aldo – Mario’s twin brother – was also a racer. The American died at the age of 56-years after a long battle with cancer.

He was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer and has been battling against it since then, as the family ran #CheckIt4Andretti on social media. The cancer resurfaced twice in 2018 and 2019 after double dose of chemotherapy but he eventually lost his life now.

A statement from Andretti Autosport read as: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that John Andretti has today lost battle with cancer. John was a loving husband and father, a devoted son and a trusted cousin. He was a philanthropist, an advocate for the sport.

“He was a dedicated teammate, a driven competitor and most importantly a dear friend. Through Race4Riley, John spent decades dedicating his time and fundraising attention to Rile Hospital for Children. When first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2017, John vowed to fight back.

“And also use his voice to help spread the word of prevention and early detection. He fought hard and stole back days the disease vowed to take away. He helped countless others undergo proper screening, and in doing so, saved lives.

“We will forever carry with us John’s genuine spirit of helping others first and himself second. Our prayers today are with Nancy, Jarett, Olivia and Amelia, with our entire family, and with fans worldwide. We urge our followers to, please, #CheckIt4Andretti.”

Not only Andretti raced in IndyCar and NASCAR, the American also competed in Camping World Truck Series. His best result was eighth in IndyCar in 1992, while he was 11th in 1998 in NASCAR. He also raced in Indy500 and Daytona 500.
