Callum Ilott has taken the victory in FIA Formula 3 European championship at Austrian soil of Red Bull Ring. The Briton has taken the victory in a race with accidents, red flags and overtakes. Stroll and Günther completes the podium.
Important day today at Spielberg for FIA F3 EC. Callum Ilott (Van Amersfoort Racing) started from pole position after yesterday’s late stewards’ decisions about track limits.
He kept the lead at the start but Günther (Prema Powerteam) immediately get a good run for a side by side battle at turn 2 where Ilott took the lead and Günther drop to third after been pass by his team mate, Lance Stroll. They finished the race with these positions.
Ben Barnicoat (Hitech GP) who was fourth at the start, watch his whole race lost after a mistake at turn 2. The Racing Steps Foundation driver managed to finish ten at the end of the race. The fourth position was taken by Mikkel Jensen (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport) who finished in that position at the end.
But the early laps were played under safety car due to a crash between, Maini (Threebond with T-Sport), Tveter (Carlin) and Weiron Tan (Carlin). Maini made contact with Tveter who spun, that made Maini stop his car as behind him Tan had no way to go and crashed with the Indian.
When the green flag came back to the track, George Russell (Hitech GP) managed to overtake Nick Cassidy (Prema Powerteam) for final fifth position. Behind them, David Beckmann (Kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport) who started 13th, finished seventh and first in rookies championship.
He was followed by another rookies who close the top10 like Harrison Newey (Van Amersfoort Racing) eight, Ralf Aron (Prema Powerteam) ninth and Barnicoat tenth.
The race had to finish earlier than expected due to a nasty crash between Carlin guys, Peter Li and Ryan Tveter. The American went off at Pirelli turn, he managed then to return on track but very slowly. Li couldn’t watch his team mate making contact. The Chinese flown over Tveter. Pedro Piquet (Van Amersfoort Racing) was also involved in the accident.
Peter Li get injured from the crash and was taken to Graz Hospital, meanwhile Tveter went to Hospital as well for an extensive exams.
