Ferrari fought back in the second practice session of 2018 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix with Sebastian Vettel topping ahead of the Red Bull Racing drivers.
The Red Bull drivers were on pace again in FP2 at Hungaroring but Vettel (1m16.834s) just managed to put his Ferrari in front by a mere 0.074s from Max Verstappen (1m16.908s) as FP1 topper Daniel Ricciardo (1m17.061s) was third.
The German had some lock-ups at the start of the session but managed to see-through without any major troubles from the Red Bull pairing. Kimi Raikkonen (1m17.153s) in fourth once again made it only Red Bull and Ferrari in Top 4.
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton (1m17.587s) lined-up fifth ahead of Valtteri Bottas (1m17.868s) – the German team not looking the best as expected but both the drivers have some more pace in the car to improve in qualifying and the race ahead.
Haas’ Romain Grosjean (1m18.065s) was once again the best of the rest in seventh as the Top 10 saw four different teams with Renault’s Carlos Sainz (1m18.495s) in eighth, Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly (1m18.518s) ninth and Force India’s Esteban Ocon (1m18.761s) 10th.
Just outside the Top 10 was the second Force India of Sergio Perez (1m18.850s) with McLaren’s Fernando Alonso (1m18.857s) slotting in 12th again. The Spaniard had an engine scare in the early stages, but managed to continue on.
While his teammate was well inside the Top 10, Haas’ Kevin Magnussen (1m18.880s) found it tough to be 13th with Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg (1m18.913s) in 14th – after his FP1 problems, it took some time before he got going in the second session.
Toro Rosso’s Brendon Hartley (1m18.916s) was 15th as the Kiwi complained about getting caught out by McLarens multiple times. Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson (1m19.043s) found some time to be 16th despite early spin and a possible unsafe release.
His teammate Charles Leclerc (1m19.137s) returned to the car to be 17th but found it tough with Williams’ Lance Stroll (1m19.645s) and Sergey Sirotkin (1m19.770s) in 18th and 20th, sandwiching McLaren’s Stoffel Vandoorne (1m19.712s) – the Belgian had an off in the session as well.
