Hendrick Motorsports, the most successful team in NASCAR history, has announced a highly anticipated return: cars will display neon yellow numbers in 2027, a color that marked the team’s most dominant era.
Between 2006 and 2010, Jimmie Johnson achieved five consecutive titles with the number 48 in neon yellow. Jeff Gordon also won all four of his titles with his legendary number 24, just as Chase Elliott did when obtaining his only Cup title in 2020.
The yellow numbers have been an iconic part of Hendrick’s successes, with memorable moments such as Terry Labonte‘s last win and Kyle Busch‘s first win in the Cup. However, in recent years this shade had disappeared, with William Byron‘s number 24 being the only one that occasionally maintains the color, including his victories at the Daytona 500 in 2024 and 2025.
Starting in 2027, all vehicles of the organization, including those of Kyle Larson (No. 5), Elliott (No. 9), Byron (No. 24) and Alex Bowman (No. 48), as well as the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts series (No. 17) of Corey Day, will carry the new yellow numbers.
Founded in 1984, Hendrick Motorsports has accumulated a total of 323 Cup wins and 15 championships, with records in iconic events such as the Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600, Brickyard 400, and Southern 500.
Additionally, they have recently announced the hiring of Connor Zilisch as the future driver of the number 48 starting in 2028, replacing Bowman, who will retire from full-time competition.
