Lewis Hamilton reveals about discussions to be part of Top Gun movie with Tom Cruise, as he notes how he was playing with F1 management over jewellery matter.

We all know Hamilton as a grand prix driver and a seven time world champion but we also know that the man has a lot of non-racing interests of which the film industry is one of them. Having seen the original Top Gun movie from 1986, he was a toddler at the time but would have seen it subsequently of course.

Fast forward to now, Hamilton revealed in a recent interview to Vanity Fair about a possible role in the new Top Gun movie alongside Tom Cruise. The Brit didn’t have time to be part of it though due to his racing commitments.

“Basically, I’m a friend of Tom Cruise,” said Hamilton. “One of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. He invited me to his set years ago when he was doing Edge of Tomorrow, and then we just built a friendship over time and we just built up a relationship over time”.

“So when I heard the second one was coming out, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I have to ask him.’  ‘I don’t care what role it is. I’ll even sweep something, be a cleaner in the back’,” summed up Hamilton. The aforementioned Cruise gave him the thumbs up where the racer would have to be one of the pilots but then there was the time issue.

Filming would take place towards the tail end of the Grand Prix campaign. “I’m a perfectionist, there just wasn’t time,” said Hamilton. “It was the most upsetting call that I think I’ve ever had,” he adding having called up Cruise and Joseph Kosinski.

In another off-beat interaction, Hamilton is well known for his self-expression. His tattoos and piercings and jewellery wearing which has been in the news quite often this season and for negative reasons too. The 2005 season saw a rule introduced forbidding drivers to sport jewellery for the concern of safety.

But up to now, there has not been a major move to enforce same. However, Hamilton has been advised to remove his earrings and nose piercings from here on in.

His opinion on the matter is interesting to say the least. Subsequently, in Miami GP, he had everything on which Hamilton states that he was mostly doing it to annoy the establishment. “People love to have power and to enforce power. Yeah, because I’m the only one that has jewellery on, really,” he said. “I was just fucking with it”.

“I don’t have any other piercings anywhere. But I love that there’s this thinking: Shit, has he got his balls pierced? Since I was a kid – rules,  I’ve never loved being told what to do,” summed up Hamilton. Always his own man, doing his own thing.

Following on from this, Hamilton removed his earrings, but his nose stud was not be done so (removed yes but cant be reinserted, at will). Granted a temporary exemption and if that expires then a decision needs to be made. He does however have the last word.
