Lewis Hamilton got pole position for the Spanish GP ahead of his teammate Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull).

Rosberg started the session ahead of Hamilton after their first attempt. The Red Bulls placed themselves behind the Mercedes, with Verstappen half a second off Rosberg. Massa was the unexpected elimination in Q1 on P18 after being unable of improving his time in his second attempt. He finished behind Palmer on P17. Ericsson, Nasr, Wehrlein and Haryanto completed the last positions of the grid.

Hamilton hit Rosberg back by setting a very quick time in Q2 which left him 6 tenths ahead of his teammate. Verstappen once again surprised on 3rd. Both Spanish drivers got into Q3, this time being Alonso‘s first since his McLaren comeback. The eliminated drivers were Hülkenberg, Button, Kvyat, Grosjean, Magnussen and Gutiérrez.

Hamilton made a mistake in his first attempt, leaving Rosberg on provisional pole ahead of Verstappen. Nonetheless, the Brit set a 1:22.000 which left Rosberg 3 tenths behind. Ricciardo got a surprising 3rd position, 4 tenths ahead of Verstappen. The Ferraris ended a disappointing session with Räikkönen on 5th and Vettel on 6th. Bottas, Sainz, Pérez and Alonso completed the top 10.
