Lewis Hamilton has explained the reasons behind him taking small breaks from the briefings held at Mercedes F1 Team.
Over the course of the 2019 F1 season, a note about Hamilton taking small breaks during briefings at Mercedes came to light, as the British driver took the opportunity to clear out as to why he does it and what are the benefits for him.
Speaking about it, Hamilton pointed to his lack of focus past a certain point in each meeting, which makes it unfruitful to plow through, where he feels it is more beneficial to step back and then return once able to better absorb information.
It was stated that Hamilton could pay attention for about 23 minutes or so. “It’s roughly something like that, yes,” he agreed. “It’s not that I don’t pay attention. It’s just that my mind switches off and it might be shorter. It’s different from time to time [actually].
“But I think over the years you learn more about yourself and again, just how things work best for you and how to get the maximum out of your own performance. And as I started to notice when I was in these meetings, that I’m [always] trying to focus.
“But things were going over my head, so then I had to step away for a second and come back in. So, I don’t think there’s a set particular time, but it’s just acknowledging for a second that went over my head and I got to step back rather than just continuing to barrel through meetings.
“I noticed that I’ve had that since I was young, even when I was at school, and obviously I couldn’t step out of the class, so the class would just keep going on. And I would have missed certain things, so that’s what’s also enabled me to continue to progress, because I take a take a break, and then just keep building and I don’t miss a thing.”
There are many snippets like these in a F1 driver’s daily routine which goes un-noticed as they try to eke out as much to increase their performance levels like Hamilton, as even a small gain made is useful in the longer run, eventually – both mentally and physically.
